Richard McSwain, M.Arch
Born and raised in Colorado, Richard McSwain finds tremendous inspiration in the beauty of the environment, both natural and built. His studies at the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Colorado Denver College of Architecture and Planning have taught him that every project can and must adapt to the unique environment at its particular location.
Before launching McSquared Design Studio, Richard worked in various construction trades and held a National General Contractor Class B license in Boulder, Louisville, and Loveland, Colorado. He began his practice doing real estate flips and remodeling projects in Northern Colorado.
In 2014 Richard and his wife moved to Kauai, where he worked as Construction Operations Manager for Puuwai Design + Construction, a luxury custom home builder in Koloa. During his tenure at Puuwai, Richard oversaw and estimated more than $62 million in residential and commercial tenant finish projects.
In 2020 Richard made the difficult decision to leave Puuwai and return to CU-Denver to complete his Master's degree in architecture. During his studies, Richard focused on sustainable design and housing access. As director of the AIAS CU Denver Chapter of Freedom by Design, Richard spearheaded the design and prototyping of the ShellHAUS, a temporary safe shelter for use with the Denver Safe Outdoor Spaces Initiative.
